WINNSBORO — Richard Winn Academy will mix some new cheers in with its old favorites this year as Megan Trammell takes over as cheerleading coach. Many of the girls she is coaching are in their first year of cheerleading.

“I’m excited about all this new, young talent,” Trammell said. “These girls are excellent role models for the school.”

With four seniors on the 15-girl squad, Trammell has a young group this year. Ten sophomores and one freshman round out the athletic bunch. Several cheerleaders played softball for RWA last year and one is playing volleyball this fall in addition to cheering.

The Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp focused on routines, stunts and dances that they can use in halftime performances, Trammell said. The intense instruction taught the girls fifteen new cheers and stunts in three days.

“We are looking forward to the season and hope lots of people come out to support the Eagles,” Trammell said.

Four students earned All-American status at the camp: Sarah Grier Thompson, Chrissy Caudill, Chloe Dawkins and Megan Simpson. Team leaders include Co-captains Sarah Coleman and Anna Grey Walters, tenth grade representative Chloe Dawkins and ninth grade representative Grace Wilder.

She said they plan on having three stunt groups this year on the sidelines. The girls worked hard at a private three-day UCA Cheerleading camp in July. They also bonded over the RWA cheerleading kid’s camp this summer.

The squad has no planned competitions but there will be one all day cheerleading showcase in November featuring local private schools.

This is Trammell’s second year teaching English at RWA. A graduate of Newberry College, she previously coached cheerleading and taught at C.A. Johnson High School.
