UNION — A Gaffney man has been charged a collision that resulted in the death of a bicyclist earlier this month.

L/Cpl Billy Elder of the S.C. Highway Patrol said that Charles L. Wright, 75, 592 Green Acres Road, Gaffney, has been charged with driving too fast for conditions in the Saturday, Aug. 18 incident.

Wright headed south on U.S. 176 near Oak Grove Road when his 2003 Chervolet van collided with a bicycle that was also traveling south.

The rider of the bicycle was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he died a short time later.

Union County Coroner William Holcombe said Tuesday the rider of the bicycle was Henry Lee Sinclair, 60, of Asheville, N.C. Holcombe said that at the time of the accident Sinclair, who he described as “an avid bicyclist” was on his way to Myrtle Beach. He said the trip to Myrtle Beach was part of a coast-to-coast trip Sinclair was on that began in California.

Wright’s case will be tried in the Union County Magistrate’s Court on Oct. 3. The maximum penalty for driving too fast for conditions is a fine of $155.
